Don’t Get Caught Without This Before Driving in Austria in 2026

From February 2026, only the new Austrian motorway vignette counts. A small thing, but trust me, it matters.

Don’t forget: from February, only the new 2026 Austrian motorway vignette will be accepted—whether you’re using the classic windshield sticker or the digital version.

I’ve driven through Austria so many times, and while I always try to stay on top of these things, it’s exactly the kind of detail that can slip through the cracks when you’re planning a trip or juggling a busy week.

What caught my attention was the reminder that if you don’t have a valid vignette, you could be facing a fine of up to €200. That’s not the kind of surprise anyone wants on a road trip.

I’ve used both types of vignettes over the years, and I have to say the digital version is a game-changer. No more fiddling with stickers, no more worrying about replacing them if your windshield gets swapped out. It’s cleaner, easier, and feels more modern. However, there’s a catch I hadn’t thought about: if you buy it online at the last minute, it might not be valid immediately. That little delay could be the difference between a smooth drive and an awkward conversation with an Austrian traffic officer.

I’ll probably go digital again, because I like the simplicity.
