Sifted’s 2025 Startup Rankings: What 2025’s Fastest-Growing List Reveals

Every year, I look forward to Sifted’s list of Europe’s fastest-growing startups.

Browsing through the list “Sifted 250 – Europe’s Fastest-Growing Startups 2025” feels like peeking into Europe’s collective imagination — the ideas we’re chasing, the ventures we’re backing, the future we’re shaping. Honestly, the 2025 edition lived up to the hype.

What struck me this year wasn’t just the scale of ambition—though there’s plenty of that, from AI copilots for doctors to carbon-negative construction materials—but the clarity of purpose. These aren’t just companies chasing unicorn status. Many are addressing systemic challenges in key areas, including food security, climate resilience, and digital trust. It’s as if the startup scene has matured into something more mission-driven, more emotionally intelligent.

Reading through the profiles, I found myself rooting for founders I’d never heard of, in cities I’ve never visited. For me, it’s a reminder that innovation doesn’t happen in isolation. These startups are thriving because ecosystems—comprising investors, universities, accelerators, and municipalities—are finally aligning around long-term value. It’s also a wake-up call for policymakers: if you want to keep talent, you need to nurture it with more than slogans. You need infrastructure, trust, and a sense of belonging.

Austria’s startup scene is rich with talent and ideas

I’ll admit, I was scanning for something else too: Austria. I wanted to see a Vienna-based startup in the mix, maybe something from the foodtech or climate innovation space. Austria has been quietly cultivating a strong startup ecosystem—especially in sectors like biotech, ethical AI, and circular economy solutions.

I have to admit, I was surprised not to see any Austrian names on this year’s Sifted list. But absence doesn’t equal irrelevance. If anything, it’s a wake-up call: visibility and storytelling matter just as much as innovation itself. Austria’s startup scene is brimming with talent and ideas, yet too often it slips under the radar. Vienna, especially, has all the right ingredients — multilingual teams, world-class universities, and a quality of life that draws global talent.

There are already standout names that prove what’s possible. PlanRadar, for instance, has become a global player in construction tech, digitising site documentation and communication across more than 60 countries. Refurbed, based in Vienna, is redefining circular consumption with its marketplace for refurbished electronics—an elegant answer to both e-waste and affordability. GoStudent, the edtech unicorn, has scaled personalised online tutoring across Europe, showing that Austrian startups can lead in sectors that touch millions of lives.

These companies may not have made this year’s Sifted 250, but they’ve already proven their staying power. They’re part of a broader movement—one that includes deep-tech pioneers like Arkeon (turning CO₂ into protein) and Mostly AI (pioneering synthetic data for privacy-safe AI training). The ambition is there.

Austria may not have featured this time, but the foundations are solid. The next wave is already forming — quietly, steadily, and with purpose. I believe it won’t stay quiet for long.
