Why 2023 Was a Blockbuster Year for Vienna

I couldn’t help but feel a little proud reading about how in-demand Vienna was as a filming location in 2023.

The Vienna Film Commission reported a 4.5% increase in filming projects compared to the previous year. and resulted in around 3,000 shooting days in the previous year, 827 of which were for feature film and series productions.

I’ve always believed that Vienna has a kind of quiet magic—elegant, layered, and full of stories waiting to be told. Apparently, filmmakers agree.

International interest was strong too, with 104 foreign projects receiving support—mostly from Germany, India, and the UK. It’s a reminder that Vienna isn’t just a local gem; it’s a global stage. The argest and longest production was HBO’s “The Regime,” starring Kate Winslet. It was filmed at some of Vienna’s most iconic spots—Schönbrunn Palace, the Hofburg, and Palais Pallavicini. Seeing those places on screen, knowing they’re part of my everyday life, is surreal in the best way.

Other productions like “Beasts Like Us” for Amazon, “Kafka” (a co-production with ORF and ARD), and the fourth season of “Vienna Blood” also added to the buzz.

Pride in seeing Vienna’s beauty, history, and soul shared with the world. Maybe next time I walk past a film crew, I’ll stop and watch a little longer. After all, Vienna is becoming a star.
